A septum piercing passes through the thin strip of soft tissue just below the cartilage wall, and the jewelry is handled constantly — flipped up, flipped down, changed. The right answer is an implant-grade titanium clicker or hinged segment ring at 16 gauge, in a diameter that matches your nose rather than the photo.

How we judged these

The same five criteria as everywhere else on this site — stated metal, stated fastening, strength of the nickel claim, how the metal suits reactive skin, and everyday wearability — with one addition specific to this placement: whether the listing states a diameter range. A septum ring of the wrong diameter either presses against the inside of the nose or swings and catches, and neither is fixable after the fact.

Diameter, in practical terms

  • 6mm — very snug. Tends to press, and it is really a helix size.
  • 8mm — sits close to the septum, easy to flip up and hide.
  • 10mm — the standard visible fit for most adults.
  • 12mm and up — a deliberate statement, and it swings.

The decorative-versus-plain choice matters less here than it does with earrings, because a septum ring sits in a spot that is either visible or flipped up out of sight. A patterned front is a real styling decision rather than a detail nobody sees.
