For a precious-metal ring, choose solid yellow gold at 14K or above, or platinum. For certainty on a budget, choose titanium or ceramic, neither of which contains nickel. The trap is white gold: it is gold alloyed with a whitening metal, one of the traditional whitening metals is nickel, and it is usually plated in rhodium that hides the alloy until it wears through. The second trap is quieter — a yellow gold ring with a white gold setting holding the stone.
How we judged these
Criteria first, ranking second. Nobody here has worn any of these rings, so the scores rate what each seller discloses and how well the named metal suits reactive skin — never a test result. The five things we looked at, in order:
Is the band metal named, and named precisely? “Titanium”, “ceramic” and “316L” are precise. “14K gold” is only half an answer until the listing also says solid and yellow.
Is the setting addressed? None of the listings on this page names the prong or channel metal separately. That is the norm on this shelf, and every entry below says so rather than assuming.
Does the stone claim hold up? Moissanite, cubic zirconia and lab-grown diamond are three different things. We only featured listings that name the stone correctly, and we skipped one otherwise attractive ring whose title calls moissanite a lab-grown diamond.
Can it be sized and maintained over decades? A ring that cannot be resized is a real limitation on something meant to be worn for life, and we say so.
Honest downsides. Every pick carries a “skip it if”, including the first one.
White gold: the trap that costs the most
Pure gold is yellow and too soft to hold a stone. Every gold ring is therefore an alloy, and the karat number tells you how much of it is gold: 14K is 58.3 percent gold by weight, 18K is 75 percent. Yellow gold is conventionally alloyed with silver and copper, which is why solid yellow gold at 14K and above is this site’s standing answer for people who want gold and cannot wear nickel.
White gold is gold alloyed with a metal that bleaches its color, and the two common choices are nickel and palladium. Nickel-whitened gold is cheaper and harder; palladium-whitened gold is the nickel-free version. The European Union’s nickel restrictions pushed much European white gold toward palladium. The United States has no equivalent federal limit, so a white gold listing sold in the US can be either, and the title almost never says which.
Most white gold is then plated in rhodium, a bright white platinum-group metal, because even whitened gold is faintly gray or yellow underneath. Rhodium is inert and people rarely react to it. The problem is that it wears with daily contact, most quickly on the underside of the band — exactly the patch of occluded skin that matters — and once it thins, whatever alloy is underneath is against the finger. That is why a white gold ring can be fine for a year and then start a reaction with no change in the ring’s appearance to explain it.
The setting is a second metal
The part of a ring holding the stone — the head, the prongs, the channel — is often made separately and attached. On most rings it is the same metal as the band. On some yellow gold rings it deliberately is not: jewelers use a white gold head so the metal does not tint a white stone yellow. That is a reasonable design decision and a nickel risk sitting against the side of the finger.

Tungsten carbide and the binder question
Tungsten carbide rings are everywhere at the low end of the market and are often sold as hypoallergenic. The catch is how they are made: tungsten carbide powder is cemented together with a binder metal, and the two traditional binders are cobalt and nickel. Rings marketed as “cobalt-free” — which sounds like the safer choice — frequently use nickel instead. Unless a listing states the binder, tungsten carbide is an unanswered question, which is why there is none on this page.
The stone: durability, not allergy
Diamond, moissanite and cubic zirconia are all inert against skin, so the stone is not a medical decision. It is a durability one, and the relevant property is hardness: diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale, moissanite around 9.25, and cubic zirconia roughly 8 to 8.5. On a ring knocked against things daily for decades, that gap decides whether the facets stay crisp. A lab-grown diamond is diamond — the same carbon crystal, grown rather than mined. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different mineral with more fire. Cubic zirconia is the budget stone and the one that clouds over years.
Sizing a ring you cannot resize
Gold and platinum rings can be resized by a jeweler. Titanium, ceramic and tungsten carbide effectively cannot, which on an engagement ring is the most common expensive mistake. Get measured by a jeweler rather than with a paper strip, measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest, and remember that fingers swell in heat. Comfort-fit bands — domed on the inside — often feel looser than a flat-interior band of the same size, so ask the seller how their sizing runs before ordering.
Where each pick fits
The ranking runs from the ring that settles the most questions to the one that asks the most of you. Jewelry ceramic is a hard, non-metallic material, usually zirconium oxide, and it contains no nickel because it contains no metal alloy at all. 316L is the grade most people with sensitive skin tolerate, and naming it is better than the bare "stainless steel" most rings on this shelf settle for. What is the best engagement ring metal for a nickel allergy?+
