Hypoallergenic necklaces

Most competing listings manage "titanium" and stop, and a worrying number of them mean titanium-colored steel.

That distinction is worth laboring because the shelf is full of traps. Searching this category returns chain after chain described as "Titanium Stainless Steel", which is steel with a titanium-sounding adjective attached, not titanium. Commercially pure titanium contains no nickel as an alloying element; austenitic stainless steel contains it by design.

"Hypoallergenic" and "non-corrosive" ride along in the same title and add nothing the grade had not already settled. The grade is checkable; the adjectives are not.

A ball chain uses a connector rather than a lobster clasp, which is one fewer component and one fewer chance for a different alloy to appear. The connector's own metal is still not named, which is the one gap left.

A necklace has a different failure point from an earring. The chain moves against the front and sides of your neck, but the piece that sits still against one spot for the whole day is the clasp, tucked at the back where you never look at it. That is the component to ask about, and it is the one this title does not name.

The chain itself being solid titanium is the important half. There is no plating to wear through at the point where a chain rubs, which is the usual reason a necklace that was fine in March irritates you in August.

The stated 40 plus 5 centimeter length is genuinely useful: 40cm sits at the base of the throat and the 5cm extender takes it to just below, which covers the two lengths most people want without guessing from a photo.

The metal is stainless steel. The title names neither the finish nor the clasp metal, and on a necklace the clasp is the component that sits still against the same patch of skin all day — check the listing photos for the colorway you are actually ordering.

At this price any applied finish is a consumable. Expect it to soften over time, particularly where the chain rubs.

This pick is here to make one point clearly: 'titanium steel' is not a titanium alloy. It is a phrase the jewelry trade uses for stainless steel, it is not a recognized material designation, and if you buy it expecting titanium you have bought something else.

That is not a reason to avoid the product. Stainless steel is a perfectly good chain metal and most people wear it happily. It is a reason to judge it as steel — which means the nickel question is the steel nickel question, not the titanium one.

One-point-two millimeters is genuinely fine. It is a chain for a small pendant or for layering, and it will not survive being caught on anything.
